History of Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery dates back to around to 4,000 years ago in Europe, which is rich in an extensive history of plastic surgery far greater than the United States’. In the late 19th century, the American medical community embraced reconstructive surgery and the history of plastic surgery in the United States began. The first major American surgeon to make his mark in the history of plastic surgery was Dr. John Peter Mettauer, who performed the first cleft palate operation in the North American during 1827. The occurrence of World War I played a huge role in improving plastic surgery in the United States. Due to the traumatic injuries of many American soldiers who returned home, the plastic surgery community was challenged to develop new procedures to help the soldiers. Many soldiers were coming home with severe burns and facial wounds. At this point in time aesthetic surgery took its place in the history of plastic surgery, as surgeons recognized the importance of appearance and how cosmetics correlated with patient happiness. Organizations The most influential professional organization in the plastic surgery field has been the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASPRS). The ASPRS was the first organization in the United States devoted to the profession of plastic surgery. This institution has made many important strides in the industry, such as the recognition of the progress and history of plastic surgery by the American Board of Surgeons. The ASPRS also developed the first qualifying exam for plastic surgeons and helped lay the ground work for all institutions and organizations to follow. Currently, there are many organizations like the ASPRS such as the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation. Modern History The modern history of plastic surgery in the United States developed during the 1960s and 70s when the public realized the aesthetic gains of plastic surgery. During the following decades, the field has expanded by providing new and innovative procedures, both cosmetic and reconstructive. Not only has the industry of plastic surgery grown but the awareness and education has improved and expanded. |
